Understanding the Most Common Scaffolding Components

Your scaffolding system is usually just the start. There are several scaffolding accessories you may also want to invest in to make sure you have what you need for your project. But first, let’s take a look at some of the individual components of a scaffolding system.

Standards
Also called uprights, these are the perpendicular tubes that move the weight of the structure to the ground.

Ledgers
The flat tubes that join between the standards are known as ledgers.

Transoms
These lean on the ledgers and include major transoms, which are positions next to the standards to support the standards. Intermediate transoms are also used to provide additional support.

Scaffolding Tubes
The tubes used in scaffolding are made of steel or aluminum. Composite tubes may also be used when working near electric cables.

Couplers
The fitting used to connect tubes together is known as a coupler. These come in swivel, right-angle, and putlog couplers.

Decks
The decks or planks are what you will walk on and may come in several different materials.

Toe Boards
Found between the vertical standards, toe boards help to provide support. They may be made of aluminum, wood, or steel.

Adjustable Base Plates
The base plate will make it easy to install your scaffolding properly. When it’s an adjustable base plate, you can adjust the height making your scaffolding more versatile.
